The Creative Process
I’ve never been much of a gear head. Brands and formats don’t interest me. Whatever tool best serves the creative process, is what’s important. And that process is always about capturing light and form that evokes an emotional response to a place and time.
It may not be a literal place, but rather, something internal: A memory, perhaps. A dream. That feeling of stillness between time, when every element aligns together in creative unity.
You might call that, Artilism.

Spotlight on Zone Plate Photography
A zone plate is a device used to focus light or other objects exhibiting wave character. Unlike lenses or curved mirrors, zone plates use diffraction rather than refraction or reflection.
A zone plate consists of a series of concentric rings, known as Fresnel Zones (named after French physicist, Augustin-Jean Fresnel), which alternate between opaque and transparent.
Light hitting the zone plate will diffract around the opaque zones. The zones can be spaced so that the diffracted light constructively interferes at the desired focus plane, creating an image there.

I became interested in pinhole and zone plate photography as a means to strip away much of the technological interface between what I saw (or imagined) and what I could capture, process and present. Even though I was no longer mixing chemicals and exposing light on paper in the darkroom, it felt analog.
In a world of high resolution perfection, these images celebrate the artifacts of imperfection. Some of the tools may still include digital processes, but here, Grain is Good.
